Invercargill, New Zealand 'A city filled with beautiful surprises' - Lesley and Joan Beresford, Hampshire, England.
With its internationally-acclaimed theatres, stadia and services, there’s always something happening in Invercargill. Home to New Zealand’s only indoor velodrome the city hosts some of the world’s most elite track cyclists for its competitions, while each year the annual favourites – the Bluff Oyster and Food Festival and the Burt Munro Challenge – attract more and more visitors, keen to be part of the southern fun. Add to the mix Southland’s successful rugby and netball teams, coupled with the city’s support for the performing arts, and discover Invercargill as a happening place.

This exhibition draws the viewer’s attention to the brief and ill-fated 1850s whaling settlement on the Auckland Islands. The sculpture, which takes the form of garments, allows the viewer to reflect on the existence of the settlement in such a remote and inhospitable place. Imagery of whales, endemic flora and fauna and vestigial physical evidence, are referenced in the works. Contact: Irene Schroder

Changes in legislation in 2010 means that there is a clear distinction between a trial and probation period. All employers are now able to make use of the “grievance free” trial period however, there are some limitations on its use and some very clear procedural guidelines to be followed to ensure that such a clause can be relied on when a relationship does not work out. Royal New Zealand Ballet Presents The TOWER Season of Cinderella
details
"If you are looking for magic, you will find it here... a breathtaking Cinderella that will enchant audiences lucky enough to see it." Ann Hunt, Sunday Star-Times Christopher Hampson's Cinderella returns to our stage in August. Acclaimed New Zealand designer Tracy Grant-Lord's sumptuous costumes and lavish sets draw you into a glittering fantasy world. In her grief, the young Cinderella plants a rose at her mother's graveside. When her father remarries, the future seems bleaker than ever. Her wicked stepmother is intent on pushing kind and beautiful Cinderella aside in favour of her two nasty step-sisters. The course of true love never did run smooth, but in this best loved of all fairy tales, Cinderella meets her prince. Dazzling against the light and dark of Prokoviev's powerful score, this ravishing interpretation of the timeless rags to riches romance is everything you could wish for and more. Stars in Their Eyes winner Gary Mullen is back!
details
Since winning Stars in Their Eyes in 2000 with a record 864,838 votes, Gary Mullen has toured the world with his breathtaking One Night of Queen. His uncanny vocal resemblance to the late Freddie Mercury has enthralled hundreds of thousands of people throughout the UK, USA, Europe, South Africa and New Zealand. One Night of Queen, performed by Gary Mullen and The Works is a spectacular live concert, recreating the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of arguably the greatest rock band of all time. Featuring hits such as I Want to Break Free, A Kind of Magic, We Will Rock You and – of course – Bohemian Rhapsody. The Press, Christchurch, New Zealand Last night I would probably have believed that the band performing were the real Queen and that Mullen was the real Freddie Mercury if I had not been aware that he died in 1991. NIGEL LATTA | Politically incorrect. entertaining. unorthodox. BRASH. ENERGETIC.
details
NIGEL LATTA Join us on Tuesday, 28 August 2012 at Ascot Park Hotel, Invercargill from 11.30am to 1.30pm. THE PSYCHOLOGY OF SUCCESS What makes the difference between winners, and losers? The psychology of success is a topic that generates a lot of hype, and a lot of self help books. Is the answer to simply repeat "I'm a tiger" twenty times each morning? Is it a high protein diet? Is it harnessing the cosmic powers of the universe to call success into your life? Is it maybe beating the 'self sabotage' scripts in our heads which secretly work to keep us down? In this address Nigel will look at the actual science to see if in amongst all the modern hoop-de-doo there may be one or two pieces of information that are actually useful in the business world. The Great Living Legends Muck-In 2012 - Southland
Saturday, 01 September 2012
Bushy Point, 7 Bryson Road, Otatara, outside of Invercargill
Living Legends Lives On!
details
Living Legends Lives On! Living Legends is a community conservation project that was set up in 2011 to commemorate New Zealand’s hosting of Rugby World Cup. Last year we planted 83,000 trees. The target is to plant 170,000 before the end of 2015. This year, public planting events will take place across the same 17 locations during August and September. We have more than 45,000 trees to plant this year so we need your help! Last year you helped us to plant 5,000 trees at Bushy Point Restoration Area and this year we have a further 2,550 to get into the ground at the same site. Let us know that you are coming along to assist us by registering at www.livinglegends.co.nz. Each planting project is dedicated to a regional ‘Rugby Legend’ who was selected in 2011 by their provincial rugby union. These Rugby Legends are people who have made an outstanding contribution to rugby in New Zealand. Come along to a Living Legends event this year and you may be lucky enough to meet your local Rugby Legend! The Legend for the Southland area is Kevin Laidlaw. There is no doubt that the work on Living Legends so far has been an outstanding success. The majority of sites show over 95% survival of plants and very good growth, largely due to the silver lining of our dismal summer, the trees loved it! Good quality plants from our nurseries and careful planting by our volunteers have ensured we made the best of the wet summer. The event will start at 9.00 am and finish around midday.
